About company

The freytag & berndt company is Central Europe’s most important publisher of atlases, maps, guidebooks and other travel literature. Its history reaches back to 1770, when Francesco Artaria opened the first lithographic works in Vienna. Gustav Freytag founded a cartographic publishing house in February 1879, also in Vienna. A merger took place in 1920 with the cartographic division of the company Artaria. The dynamic development of the company Freytag-Berndt und Artaria came mainly after WWII, when it greatly expanded production. This development ranked it amongst the most important cartographic publishers in all of Central Europe.

After 1990, the company founded subsidiaries in the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Germany, Spain and China. The company also owns the German publishing house ROTHER Verlag and the biggest Czech cartographic company, SHOCart. ROTHER Verlag is one of the most famous German publishers of hiking and other outdoor guides. SHOCart is the largest Czech cartographic company which has produced unique cycling and hiking maps of the whole Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Freytag & berndt now also provides complex services to various B2B clients: large corporations, national tourism boards and state, regional and municipal government offices. Services range from building stands at exhibitions and fairs, graphic services, design and printing of promotional materials, sophisticated mobile applications, a wide rangeof promotional items, public relations, advertising and other marketing techniques as well as providing ground tourism services.
